Spastic Songbook with Joe Ferrara

Join Joe Ferrara (a.k.a. Father Divine) for a show that will encompass music form various divergent styles (jazz, rock, reggae, classical and world music).  With occasional co host El Infarto's bourbon enhanced rants and witty observations, spastic songbook will no doubt vacillate between incoherent musings and shear satirical brilliance.

Thursday 1/22/10 - JONNY & THE RUSSOS - Hosted by Chris Mek and Will

Jonny & The Russos   http://www.myspace.com/therussotrio

A trio of youthful souls introduced the Tony T New Year with a fresh blend of music.  Jonny & the Russos consists of Matt Russo (guitars), Dane Carmichael (bass, of Mythology), and John Russo (drums.)  J&tR's took over the studio the minute they realized that they were live and recording for the Tony T audience.  Matt Russo poured out his influences and skill into seamless guitar playing while singing the group's vibrant songs.  Dane Carmichael provided rootsy bass lines that when juxtaposed to his playing in his other band, Mythology, showed the duality of Dane's playing and how versatile a performer he is.  And synchronizing this great trio was John Russo on the drums.  In order to ground this band of genre jumpers, John perfectly completmented the unforgettable performance of Jonny & the Russos for the first performance of the year.  If Jonny & the Russos foreshadows the year 2010 on Tony T Radio, then the year is going to be truly amazing.

Friday 11/11/09 - KAGERO - Japanese Gypsy Rock - Hosted by Deano

Kagero   www.kagero.com

Kaz and the gang came in on a Friday night in November and entertained us as they do so well.  Simply put, this band is fun, eclectic and very talented to say the least.  A simple three piece, yet the combined musicianship of Kaz (vocals, harp & guitar), Rob (electric and standup bass, vocals) and J.W. (fiddle, saw) makes you think there is a room full of  musicians.  A must see !

From their bio:

What is Japanese Gypsy Rock?

"Cultural Confusion is our specialty," confides bandleader and founder Kaz Fujimoto, as he drains the last of his Guinness.  This cat is a Japanese Gypsy -- you can tell from his personal style -- maybe it's the colorful scarf, aviator goggles or his proper English accent.  No, it's the pants.  The guy has great pants. Kaz and bass player Robbie Simpson have been making music together for over a decade.  Robbie also has great pants and an impressive collection of Heavy Metal T-shirts.  Robbie lives for hard rock and other tribal traditions of his home: New Jersey.  Violin player J.W. joined the band after a seismic shift two years ago when Kagero began to develop their current sound.

KAGERO regularly travels throughout the New York Metro Area and crawls into the Kazmovan to gig in Jersey or parts North, South or West. The sound has been described as a melting pot of tonalities and rhythms from Asia, the Middle East, South America and Eastern Europe -- "Cultural Confusion".  Sometimes the songs are beautiful imagery, sometimes sad folk tales, and sometimes silly songs about drinking.   But the tunes are always fun, and the show is often a very high energy dancing good time. Kagero’s world music goulash is very tasty -- even if you don’t always know what’s you’re eating. Just call us your local neighborhood urban-gypsophonic, border-jumping, international debtor’s prison groove-loving feel-good band next doo

Thursday 12/10/09 - TURBINE - Hosted by Chris Mek and Will

Turbine   www.turbinemusic.com

TonyTRadio had the honor of having Turbine perform in-studio on December 10th in the midst of their rigorous touring schedule.  It was a privilege to be able to have such talented musicians in an intimate setting.

The sublime performance of the four piece band left listeners with sounds so imaginative that they can’t be defined. The richness and depth of the music was hypnotizing, drawing each viewer into the vibrancy of Turbine’s unique style.

Turbine consists of Jeremy Hillard (electric guitar, vocals) Ryan Rightmire (harmonica, acoustic guitar, vocals) Justin Kimmel (bass, vocals) and Octavio Salman (drums). Although made of four individuals, the band played as though they were one. They have the uncanny ability to read their band mates and create awe-inspiring jams.

Words cannot capture the true nature and quality of Turbine’s music. It is something that must be experienced firsthand.

Friday 11/13/09 - DOUBLE BREASTED - Hosted by Zeke Carey

Double Breasted   www.doublebreastedmusic.com

This is not just your ordinary three piece band.  With driving beats, bow-drawn bass lines and leads, along with angelic harp plucking, this trio of talented musicians takes their art form to a higher level.

Cellist Ardith Collins has a dynamic vocal range that on its own merit is superb.  Kristy Chmura's sublime vocal performance is like nothing we have ever heard here at TonyT's before.  Josh Bicknell equally has a vocal style all of his own, delivering a smoky smooth performance.

Our expectations were high when we were first introduced to the band via the web.  Their performance  exceeded our expectations, and raised the bar here in the studio.  We strongly urge all you music fans to check out their page, give them a listen, and go see them live.

Friday 11/6/09 - AND THE ZOMBIE - Hosted by Chris Mek and Will

ATZ   www.myspace.com/andthezombie

A trio stepped into Tony T's on November 6th. You could feel something in the air—Energy. As the sound check got the levels right, you could definitely feel it building.

And then it began.  Starting with songs off their recently released debut album, "Thirteen Songs About Five People You Know," the power trio of And the Zombie tore the roof off of the studio.  What started as an energized performance at the beginning of the night turned into a full fledged party by the end of their sets.

ChrisMek and Will tossed provocative questions along the way to Jordan Morrissey (drums, vocals), Dan Watts (guitar), and Jay Bakay (bass)  All the questions were answered with sincerity and the interview segments are a must see for any fan.

ATZ kept the ball rolling throughout the night with great originals, several solid covers, and even a CD giveaway!!!!  The question you should be asking yourselves is "how did they giveaway that rockin' CD of theirs?" Watch the replay to find out!

And the Zombie came and dominated the Tony T Studio with a memorable performance for all to see.  It was truly a great night of music and a must see for all Tonytradio fans.

Friday 10/23/09 - MYTHOLOGY - Hosted by Chris Mek and Will

Mythology   www.myspace.com/mythologybandwm

On September 23rd a trio stepped into Tony T’s studio.  The expectation was a rock-and-roll band.  The result far exceeded all expectations.  Mythology showed the audience that it was much more than a rock band.  Mythology’s eclecticism is what sets them apart from their contemporaries and with the release of their debut album “Greatest Hits” they have demonstrated their potential.  They ranged from prog to jazz, jazz to acoustic, and acoustic to rock all within the show’s limits.

With several  sets that were each followed with a Q&A session, the audience was able to  get a personal understanding of Jason Turner (drums), Dane Carmichael (bass,  vocals), and Brynen Sosa (guitar, vocals).

As far ranging as their music is, their candid answers to the questions posed by Chris and Will are a definite must see for an understanding of the method behind their musical madness.

The band then took several audience requests and closed the show with a strike of lightning. And with this strike, Tony T’s was left with a performance of truly MYTHOLOGICAL proportion!

Saturday 8/22/09 - BERN & THE BRIGHTS - Hosted by Chris Mek and Will

Bern & The Brights   http://www.bgroove.com

On Saturday, August 22, 2009 , Bern and the Brights graced TonyTRadio with their second in-studio performance. The show was hosted by Chris and Will from the ChrisMek show.  The five piece band showed why they deserved a return performance by giving fans a memorable show consisting of familiar originals and several new tracks to keep them on their toes.

The show started with a brief introduction of the band members but the real introduction was when Bern and the Brights began to play therefore introducing themselves through their music.

After completing their first of two sets, Chris and Will had a Q&A which included all the band members. The impromptu nature of the interview created a special vibe to the band’s answer.  The questions truly gave an inside look at the unique and close bonded relationship that these band members have with one another.

Shawn, bassist, gave insight into his most memorable performances with the band; Jose, drummer, told of his inspirations which displayed an in depth look at the drummer’s amazing ability; and Nicole, violinist, gave viewers a behind-the-scenes glance at her early classical training and her fortunes to find a band that mixed with her musical abilities.

Bern and Catherine were asked the truth surrounding their lyrical inspirations and questions probing their life’s inspirations and without missing a beat, they were able to candidly answer the questions that give them their gears in fronting the machine known as Bern and the Brights.

Their second set ended their night once again leaving the Tony T audience once wanting more.

Friday 4/18/09 - FATHER DIVINE - Hosted by TonyT

Father Divine   http://www.fatherdivine.net

On a Friday night in North Jersey Father Divine graced the stage at TonyT's for what was a memorable night of music for us all.  While not one of my most memorable mixes (too long of a break for me), the band did not disappoint.   The band is a collaboration of four exceptional musicians led by Joe Ferrara.  Joe is a multi talented musician who knows how to keep your attention on stage.  Joe will go from a very strong vocal to a keyboard solo, mix in some sax, a bit of megaphone, and then other assorted toys.   All this while a very solid rhythm section is grooving behind.   Rock, Pop, Jazz, Theatrical, Jam, where ever it fits I like it!

From their bio:

Like the city from which it hails, the music of the band Father Divine is a melting pot of diverse cultures, ideals and aesthetics. Based in New York City and founded by Joe Ferrara (aka Father Divine) in 2000, the band's sound is a bold look into the depth and potential that music truly can have. Through the sounds of World Music, Progressive Hard Rock, underground, late 60's pop, Classical counterpoint, and countless other influences, the elements of each song can be thought of as a sculpted menagerie layered with nuances for the listener to uncover. At times the songs are reminiscent of cinematic soundtracks, and other times more archetypical in form, but always striving toward a unique expression and outlook.

Saturday 2/21/09 - BERN & THE BRIGHTS - Hosted by Zeke Carey

Bern & The Brights   http://www.bgroove.com

Bern & The Brights charged our studio on Saturday night with soft grooving rhythms, staccato violin and a super tight rhythm section.  Bern's voice cuts through the air the same way her lyrics speak to your mind.  Laid back harmonies, grooving guitar and a definite ungelating groove makes for an extremely enjoyable and competent performance.  Catherine McGowan compliments this groove with her powerful voice and spectacular song writing abilities.  Sometimes we here at TonyT's do not know what to expect when bands come in for a show.  Needless to say, we were thoroughly impressed at the level of professionalism and energetic devotion this band expressed to their craft.  A must see live show for you, and a band that will be back here soon!

Saturday 1/24/09 - THE BLAIRE REINHARD BAND

The BRB   http://www.myspace.com/blairereinhard

Blaire and the gang were back in the studio for an amazing night of music on Saturday.  If you have not experienced this band yet, you are missing out on one of the most original acts on the East Coast.  The musicianship and vocal harmonies of this band combined with the production put into their live shows helps define the word original.  The BRB just finished tracking some drums here at the studio so be on the lookout for something amazing to be released in the next couple of months.  The Blaire Reinhard Band, I have a feeling you will be hearing this name more in the near future.

Wednesday 1/21/09 - HYPHEN-ONE & DAYLOW  Hosted by Zeke Carey

DAYLOW   http://www.daylow.net

Funk, Rap, Jazz and Pop all wrapped up in this eclectic group of musicians.  New Jersey's Heiphen-One and Daylow burned up the internet on Wednesday night with a dizzying array of grooves.  Hyphen-One's frenetic yet soothing vocals flowed effortlessly.  This combined with Ruby's angelic harmonies and jazz based lead vocals, added to one of our favorite evenings here at TonyT's.  The rhythm section is tight, loose and smooth all at the same time. The subtle hint of trombone really sets these guys apart.  Smart music for smart people, kudos to the music gods who threw this group together.  Don't forget to check out their page. Their album Ill Regular is out now!

Wednesday 1/14/09 - ANGER hosted by BUZZY

ANGER   http://www.myspace.com/uncleanger

TonyTRadio was recently graced with a visit from seminal NJ Punk/Hardcore band Anger.. Originally a 4-piece, then 3-piece, then back to 4-piece and now 3-piece again, ANGER is: Terry Torino – guitar/lead vocals; Mike Driscoll – drums and Rich Tanis – bass/vocals…they came, played and conquered with the unrelenting and uncompromising commitment that makes them NJ’s Premier Band in their genre for the last 17 years. Better than just a punk band – they rock with seamless musicianship you wouldn’t expect when you hear “punk” and no holds barred, in your face and tell it like it is (and how you really think but are afraid to tell anyone!) song writing style. From everyday observations to those bizarre thoughts you keep locked in your head, ANGER is gonna give it to you! Even if Punk is not really your flavor… you will certainly be entertained by these old-school veterans….and young punkers out there… take a lesson on how it’s done right. Check them out on the web, buy their music, and most of all SEE THEM LIVE!
